A launch party like no other
BBC Three x Radio 1: The Launch Party
BBC Three is now on TV! To celebrate, Radio 1 and BBC Three combined forces to host a launch party fronted by Greg James and Clara Amfo. We were invited to design the titles, branding and overall identity for the first show that would be opening the channel. Three would be kicking off in style with live music from the likes of Danny Byrd and D Double E, BBC Sound of 2022 winner and finalists PinkPantheress and Wet Leg, and Nicôle Lecky - star of the amazing new BBC Three show Mood.
Our task was to create a coherent look across the launch show, with an upbeat party vibe. No pressure, as this would be the channel opener.
The initial concept is best summarised as BBC Three ‘taking over’ the airwaves. It’s a little bit dangerous but felt right for the tone of voice. Where better to start than exploring the iconic architecture of BBC Broadcasting House. Wanting to reflect the history of the BBC in it's centenary year, but completely reinterpret what the building may look like if taken over entirely by the world of BBC Three.
We created a 3D environment with BBC Three neon colours forming the shape of the city skyline and outline of Broadcasting House. Populated with billboards, the focal point is the mast on the roof of Broadcasting House lit in Three Green.
Pushing the design further we added in finesses such as fireworks and search lights to the sky for a euphoric and celebratory mood. Energised signals pulse out from the mast of Broadcasting House as the channel is switched on. To showcase the very best of BBC Three, we populated the billboard with programme logos.
We also animated the launch party show logo in line with the wider channel presentation and creative and created a lock up that worked across platforms.
A series of bumpers were created which separated segments of the show. We used the billboard device to navigate the viewer throughout.
We worked closely with Molecular Sound who crafted the theme music and sonic identity that runs throughout the show in various different mixes. The theme is based on the idea of what the ultimate party may sound like with sub mixes in House, Grime and Breakbeats.
